Hair transplant recovery involves several different timelines: the scalp's early healing, a period when transplanted hairs may shed, and the slower appearance of new growth. A calendar can help you understand those broad stages and prepare questions for your clinic. It cannot tell you how your own transplant is healing or predict your result.
This guide brings together general information from the NHS and American Academy of Dermatology. Your surgeon's instructions take priority. If something worries you, contact your clinic instead of waiting for the next milestone.
The timeline at a glance
These ranges are general reference points, not deadlines or promises.

- Months 6-12The AAD reports results often become visible at six to nine months, sometimes twelve.
- Months 10-18The NHS gives this range for full results.

Healing, shedding and growth are different stages
Early recovery is the time to follow the specific aftercare plan you were given. Ask your clinic about washing, activity, medicines and follow-up appointments; a general timeline cannot provide personal clearance for any of these.
The AAD describes shedding in the first few weeks and a possible thinner appearance around month three. AAD These changes alone cannot establish whether an individual transplant has succeeded or failed. Record what you notice and discuss questions with your treating team.
Visible growth and the final appearance are later parts of the process. You do not have to wait until a particular month to ask for a review. Bring your clinic your questions and a dated record, rather than trying to judge your result against someone else's photos.
Make your progress photos easier to compare
The purpose of a photo diary is to create a useful record. It does not diagnose a problem or measure the success of surgery. Small differences in lighting, angle, hair length and camera distance can change how the same area looks.
- Choose repeatable views, such as the front, crown, both sides and donor area.
- Use a similar background, light source and camera distance each time.
- Record the actual date, and note relevant differences such as a haircut or different lighting.
- Ask your clinic how often it would like photographs and which views are useful.
- Keep your originals so you can revisit the record later.
Regrow's photo diary keeps photos on their dates and lets you compare matching angles. If you started recording late, adding older photos on their original dates can make the record more useful. Comparison is a way to document change, not a substitute for a clinical assessment.
Keep your clinic's plan close by
Store your aftercare instructions, clinic contact details and follow-up dates together. Write down questions when they occur to you and keep a note of the answers your clinic provides.
Regrow can keep your own clinic documents and reminders in one place. The plan still comes from your clinic. If an app reminder, a website or a community post conflicts with that plan, ask your treating team to clarify it before making a change.
When to contact your clinic
The NHS advises contacting the clinic if you have severe pain or unexpected symptoms. NHS You can also ask about anything that concerns you or differs from what your team told you to expect. A timeline should never be a reason to delay getting help.
Common questions
Is shedding the same as losing the transplant?
The AAD describes shedding of transplanted hairs during the early weeks. AAD It is not enough to assess your individual outcome; ask your clinic about your own situation.
Can a timeline tell me when my final result will appear?
No. Published ranges are broad guides. Your clinic can discuss your progress and when a review would be useful.
Can I start tracking after the first month?
Yes. Start with today's date and add earlier photos on the dates they were taken. A partial record can still help you organize your questions. See how to use a hair transplant tracker and a real dated photo comparison.
Is the Regrow app free?
The core Regrow app is free to download and use on iPhone and Android. Optional Secure Backup is separate. Check the app for its current backup terms.
